S3 E103 Acupuncture to Herbal Remedies: Achieving Hormonal Balance with Traditional Chinese Medicine

In this episode of Rising Into Mindful Motherhood, I speak with Nicole Lentfer, a licensed acupuncturist with over 20 years of experience focused on natural health. We discuss natural medicine practices, including nutrition, herbal medicine, and acupuncture, focusing on natural hormone balance. Nicole shares her journey into natural medicine prompted by personal health issues and explains common signs of hormone imbalance and how they can be addressed using traditional Chinese medicine techniques. The conversation also touches on dietary recommendations, including the importance of warm foods and herbs, and provides tips for maintaining a balanced system for optimal health and fertility.

The Power of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Recalling her personal health battles during her undergraduate years, Nicole shared how her journey into natural medicine began. Battling severe acne, headaches, and fatigue with little success through conventional methods, it was acupuncture that changed everything. A simple dietary adjustment, suggested by an acupuncturist, turned her life around, and within a month, she saw dramatic improvements in her health. This experience fueled her passion for TCM and its potential to address deeper health imbalances.

Recognizing Hormonal Imbalance
Hormonal imbalance manifests in various ways, and while common, many symptoms are not normal. Acne, PMS, and menstrual migraines, often dismissed as normal teenage woes, are signals from the body that require attention. In TCM, such symptoms may be diagnosed as chi stagnation or a spleen imbalance, conditions that affect blood flow and energy (chi) within the body.

Embracing a Holistic Lifestyle
Nicole emphasizes the importance of a warm and balanced diet, vital in TCM. Many of us lean towards cold foods—smoothies and salads—believing them to be the healthiest choices. However, these can introduce cold into the body, causing stagnation and pain. TCM encourages balance, suggesting the combination of warm and cold foods, akin to the Japanese sushi tradition, which pairs cold fish with hot tea and warming ginger.

Beyond Diet: Lifestyle and Herbal Recommendations
While herbs are potent tools in TCM, Nicole urges individuals to seek guidance from trained practitioners, as incorrect usage can lead to adverse effects. Customized herbal formulas, along with acupuncture, are powerful allies in restoring balance. At home, small lifestyle changes like wearing warm clothing, especially on the feet and neck, can maintain internal warmth and support a more harmonious body state.

Achieving Holistic Fertility
Throughout her practice, Nicole has witnessed the magic of holistic approaches in fertility journeys. Her philosophy is simple: by achieving overall health and balance, fertility naturally follows. The focus remains on nurturing a healthy body to foster a conducive environment for conception and healthy pregnancy.

Resources and Connection
Nicole shared resources to support listeners in managing stress with herbs tailored to individual stress manifestations. Additionally, she offers virtual herbal consultations, where personalized recommendations are made based on symptoms like tongue examination, a basic diagnostic tool in TCM.
