S2 E85 How To Restore Your Fertility When Breastfeeding

In this episode, I talk with Kelly Durbin, an international board certified lactation consultant and childbirth educator, about navigating breastfeeding and fertility.

Kelly shares her personal journey into breastfeeding advocacy and provides evidence-based insights on breastfeeding's impact on fertility, including using breastfeeding as natural birth control and managing fertility while continuing to breastfeed. The conversation covers nutritional recommendations for optimizing maternal health and preparing for subsequent pregnancies.

The Journey into Lactation Support

Kelly's passion for supporting women in their breastfeeding journeys was ignited by her personal experiences. Before becoming a lactation consultant, Kelly was an elementary school teacher. Her struggles and triumphs with breastfeeding her own daughters led her to recognize a significant gap in breastfeeding education and support. As she faced typical breastfeeding challenges and persevered through them, Kelly became driven to share the vital information and support she gained with other mothers.

The Importance of Prenatal Breastfeeding Education

One key point Kelly highlights is the importance of educating oneself about breastfeeding before the baby arrives. While childbirth education classes are commonplace, dedicated breastfeeding classes are less so. Kelly emphasizes that while some breastfeeding knowledge and skills are learned on the job, much can be better managed with prior knowledge. This blend of prepared knowledge and real-time learning can make a significant difference in a mother's breastfeeding journey.

Breastfeeding as Birth Control and Fertility Planning

Kelly shared a comprehensive explanation about using breastfeeding as a birth control method and planning for future pregnancies. Breastfeeding can be highly effective as birth control under three conditions: 1. The baby is under six months old. 2. The baby is exclusively breastfeeding (no supplemental bottles or solid foods). 3. The mother has not had the return of her menstrual cycle. When these conditions are met, breastfeeding can be more than 98% effective as birth control, comparable to the pill. However, for mothers looking to conceive again, fertility returns gradually, and significant changes, like reducing the intensity of breastfeeding or dropping night feeds, can prompt ovulation.

Nourishing the Body for Fertility

Kelly underscores the significance of nourishing the body properly to support both breastfeeding and future pregnancies. This involves consuming high-quality fats, a whole foods diet rich in vegetables and high-quality proteins, and staying hydrated. Avoiding heavily processed foods and focusing on nutrient-dense options is crucial during this period of recovery and preparation.

Navigating the Timing of Subsequent Pregnancies

The optimal timing for subsequent pregnancies varies widely among women. Factors such as maternal health, age, and personal circumstances play significant roles. While research often suggests that a two-year gap is beneficial for both maternal and infant health, it ultimately depends on the individual. Kelly points out that closely spaced pregnancies can increase the risk of complications but acknowledges that many mothers must balance various factors when planning their families.

Kelly's Book: A Resource for Breastfeeding Challenges

Kelly's recently released book, "Protecting Your Potential for Breastfeeding" serves as a comprehensive resource for mothers navigating breastfeeding challenges. The book is divided into two parts: the foundational principles and the many obstacles that can interfere with breastfeeding success. Whether used as a foundational guide or a reference for troubleshooting, this book offers valuable insights and support for every stage of lactation.

Final Words Of Wisdom

Kelly Durbin's expertise provides a wealth of knowledge and support for mothers navigating the interplay between breastfeeding, fertility, and motherhood. By prioritizing education, nourishing the body, and understanding the nuances of fertility planning, mothers can make empowered decisions for themselves and their families.
